DARIUS, TAYLOR NO-SHOWS AT WORKOUT

Three veteran players who have contract issues with the Jaguars, running back Fred Taylor, safety Donovin Darius and cornerback Fernando Bryant, were no-shows yesterday when the team opened its offseason workout program at Alltel Stadium.

Taylor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said Taylor was excused because of a family matter and said he'll start attending in the middle of the week.

Rosenhaus said he's made a lot of progress in contract talks with the Jaguars and said he hopes to have a new deal soon.

"It's good news for Fred and Jaguars fans," he said.

The agents for Darius, who was slapped with the franchise tag, and Bryant, who's in the last year of his contract, but wants a new one, didn't return phone calls.

Coach Jack Del Rio said he's talked to "some of the [three] players," but not all of them, and gave no details.

When asked what their status was, he said, "The status is good. What we talk about is our business. There's no problem. Nothing to report. It's a voluntary offseason workout program."

JAGS GET COMPENSATORY PICK

Even though the Jaguars' roster was ravaged by the salary cap last year, they received only one compensatory pick yesterday -- a fourth round choice.

The league announced that it passed out 32 extra picks with four teams -- Baltimore, Green Bay, Miami, the New York Giants and St. Louis -- getting five of them.

The league counted only Kevin Hardy, Mike Hollis and Renaldo Wynn as unrestricted free agents who departed, but offset them by the signings of wide receiver Patrick Johnson and Chris Naeole.

The Jaguars didn't get any credit for losing such players as Keenan McCardell, Aaron Beasley and Hardy Nickerson because they were waived before their contracts expired so they weren't considered unrestricted free agents.

The three players they lost in the expansion draft, Tony Boselli, Gary Walker and Seth Payne, also weren't counted. …
