Jacksonville University coach Steve Gilbert admits he has a number of offensive and defensive starting positions available. All he needs now are some more players to compete for those jobs.

Because of injuries and graduation, Gilbert didn't have as many players as he would have liked participating in the Dolphins' spring practices, which concluded with a 45-minute scrimmage on Monday. Around six to seven defensive players were forced to sit out because of injuries, and only seven offensive linemen were able to take part in the 12 spring practices allowed by the Pioneer Football League.

"Certainly, you'd love to have the whole team out there in the spring," Gilbert said. ". . . But looking at the positive side of it, it gives more players the chance to get more reps and to get players seen by the coaches."

Gilbert, entering his third season at JU, expects the competition at several positions -- including fullback, wide receiver and defensive back -- to heat up when two-a-day practices begin in August. …
