APPRENTICESHIP, TRAINING TRUST BUYS WAREHOUSE

The Jacksonville Plumbers & Pipefitters Joint Apprenticeship &Training Trust recently bought a 36,000-square-foot Westside office-warehouse building for $805,000 from LADS, a Memphis partnership, according to Henry Rogers, a commercial real estate broker at Coldwell Banker Walter Williams Realty in Jacksonville.

The apprenticeship training school will use the building at 489 Stevens St. to expand its teaching and training services to apprentices, said Jerry Thomas, the school's training director. The school now operates in a 10,000-square-foot building at 5437 Cassidy Road.

FISHERMEN ELIGIBLE FOR FEDERAL AID LOANS

Florida's shrimp, clam and crab fishing companies, hammered by freezes over the past winter, will receive low-interest federal loans to rebuild, Gov. Jeb Bush said this week.

The Small Business Administration's economic injury disaster program will be available to businesses, Bush said. A request for disaster unemployment assistance to help individuals still is pending.

Bush asked the White House to declare the series of freezes from November 2002 to February 2003 a major disaster, which would let the state receive programs and funds under the Stafford Act.

Surveys conducted over the past two weeks indicate more than 250 businesses in 32 counties were hurt by the freezes. State analysts estimate the freezes temporarily put more than 2,000 workers out of work, resulting in income losses of more than $28 million, Bush said.
