Oklahoma Rig Count Hits Five-Week High

The number of drilling rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in Oklahoma increased to the highest level in five weeks for the week ended Friday.

The state's active rig count for the week ended Friday totaled 190, up from 187 the previous week and up from 152 for the same week in 2005, according to a weekly report from Houston-based Baker Hughes.

It was the highest rig count for the state since the week ended Sept. 29 when Oklahoma had 191 active rigs.

Oklahoma's weekly active rig count for 2006 peaked at 196 for the week ended Sept. 22. The lowest weekly rig count was 149 for the week ended Jan. 6.

Oklahoma accounted for 10.9 percent of the rigs active nationwide last week.

For the week ended Friday, 1,739 rigs were active nationwide, down from 1,744 the previous week but up from 1,496 for the same week in 2005. …
