50 Making a Difference Profile: Carolyn Stager, Oklahoma Municipal League Exec. Director

Article excerpt

"Experience has taught me that our success in life stems not from the hands we're dealt, but from the way we play them."

Carolyn Stager knows what she's talking about. The newly appointed executive director of Oklahoma's Municipal League spent four years recovering in the wake of the F5 tornado that struck Oklahoma City on May 3, 1999. The tornado destroyed her Del City home, cost the life of her unborn grandchild, and nearly destroyed her in the process. Stager underwent four years of reconstructive surgery to repair smashed bones and replace the scalp that was literally ripped from her head during the storm.

Yet despite those injuries, Stager persevered, continuing to meet her demanding job as chief operating officer at the Municipal League and meeting with state lawmakers between surgical operations. She is presently collaborating with author and former KOCO-TV5 news anchor Kimberly Suiters on a book about the May 3 tornadoes.

"My faith sustained me through that experience, and my hope is that my story can inspire the same confidence in every person," Stager said. "Each of us is given certain gifts, and the way we choose to use those gifts is what determines our destiny. This approach means that no matter what happens in life, we alone have the power to choose how we react, to adjust our attitudes and to succeed - no matter what."

A graduate of Rose State College's paralegal program, Stager earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in political science from the University of Central Oklahoma and was named UCO's Outstanding Graduate Student in 1998. She is a member of the National League of Cities, The State Chamber and the Oklahoma Society of Association Executives, and is a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma's Class XIII. Her professional affiliations also include serving as president of the Oklahoma Capital Investment Club, board member of the Oklahoma Community Institute and Youth Cornerstone, member of the Miss Oklahoma Scholarship Program, and past president and board member of Keep Oklahoma Beautiful. …
