Article excerpt

What could be better than a night of jazz and an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner at Remington Park? Knowing the money paid for your ticket will help someone with lupus.

"A Night of Jazz and Jockeys" will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Eclipse Room at Remington Park in Oklahoma City. The event is one of the major fundraisers for the Oklahoma Chapter of The Lupus Foundation of America.

Entertainment will be provided by the Burton Band, a band that has been performing in the Oklahoma City area for almost 20 years and has served as the house band at the Waterford for the last seven years. During their long career in music, Barbara and Charles Burton have performed with many well-known entertainers, including Nancy Wilson and Vic Damone.

The evening will also feature both live and silent auctions. Among the items being auctioned will be sports memorabilia, including a football signed by all living Heisman trophy winners from the University of Oklahoma and a Blazers hockey stick signed by the entire team.

"The buffet is done by Remington Park, so you know it's going to be really nice," said Lea Jensen, executive director of the Oklahoma Chapter of the Lupus Foundation.

Former Oklahoma City Assistant Fire Chief Jon Hansen will serve as master of ceremonies for the evening. Hansen is author of Oklahoma Rescue, a book about his participation in the rescue effort in April 1995 when the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed. He is also a member of the board of directors for the Oklahoma Lupus Chapter.

The event will raise money the Lupus Foundation can use to provide support services for people suffering from lupus, a painful, chronic autoimmune disease that affects as many as 25,000 Oklahomans, 9 out of 10 of whom are women.

There is currently no cure for the disease, in which the body's immune system attacks the body's cells and tissue, causing inflammation and tissue damage. …
