Boot Camp in Tulsa Aims to Make Workout an Adventure

At 5:30 a.m. when others are in a peaceful slumber, Clint Howard takes on the role of drill sergeant.

Women of all ages and sizes brave the early morning for one purpose - to get fit.

"In the gym you are just going to go through the same stuff," said Howard, co-instructor of Tulsa Adventure Boot Camp for Women. "With our boot camps, every day is like an adventure."

Howard and Michael Watkins have operated a private personal training studio in Tulsa for two years. They launched a boot-camp exercise program in January.

Fitness boot camps for women received their start on the West Coast. They are touted as a jump-start exercise program to get faster results.

Howard had been in the personal training industry for more than 10 years. He considered venturing into women's boot camps after talking with several associates from out of state who had successfully implemented similar programs. While personal training would remain his core business, Howard said he saw the potential niche in the women's boot-camp market.

"The boot camps got popular because of the social element and the working outside element," he said. "It brings together a like- minded group to improve fitness."

Howard bought a license through national company Adventure Boot Camp to bring the program to the south Tulsa and Jenks area. The startup cost to put together the camps was about $5,000. Since the boot camps are held outside, Howard didn't have to worry about securing a location.

The boot camps consist of four weeks of fitness instruction, nutritional counseling and motivational training. Camps are one hour in length and start at 5:30 a.m. …
