Norman-Based Alliance Maintenance Focuses on Expansion

Norman-based Alliance Maintenance has launched an aggressive recruiting campaign to expand the presence of the commercial cleaning company into 16 cities in nine states.

President Neil Boyd said the company wants to recruit 40 new area developers to manage the new sites by the end of next year, adding to the 20 it already has in place.

"We've been working toward this expansion for three years," Boyd said.

The company's ramp-up to expansion has involved development of training programs, marketing and online account-management systems.

Chief Financial Officer David Ridgway said Alliance spent part of that time retooling and improving its area-developer program.

The company is recruiting in Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio in Texas; Albuquerque, N.M.; Kansas City and Wichita, Kan.; St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo.; Memphis and Nashville, Tenn.; New Orleans, La.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Colorado Springs and Denver, Colo.; and in Tulsa.

Perhaps ironically, the downturn in the economy has been good for business.

"We're in a very recession-resistant industry," Boyd said. "We see this as a great opportunity for us. We've been connecting with really great salespeople who are unemployed."

Boyd said area developers are licensees of the company.

"They are like sales managers in our organization," he said. "They're executives."

Boyd said the arrangement is similar to a franchise program, although area developers do not pay a franchise fee.

"We find entrepreneurial salespeople, and then we teach them how to earn money in this business," he said.

Boyd said developers go through a one-week training program at the Norman office.

"We teach them the janitorial business, then they go back to their home market," he said. "We give them support, teach them how to bid the accounts, give them some cash-flow support and help them build business. …
