Bulgarian Environmental Landscape Artist Christo Comes to Tulsa

Here's your chance to meet two of the most controversial artists of our time.

At 8 p.m. July 11, the Bulgarian environmental landscape artist Christo and his partner/spouse Jeanne-Claude will visit Tulsa'a Philbrook Museum of Art for a special screening of the documentary The Gates.

This regional premiere celebrates the 2007 film by Antonio Ferrerra, Albert and David Maysles, and Matthew Prinzing. The Gates will open its Circle Cinema run the following day.

That documentary examines the three-decade effort by Christo and Jeanne-Claude to release a "golden river" of fabric pedestrian gates through New York's Central Park.

Originally attempted in 1979 as the city battled insolvency, Christo encountered repeated denials until New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg opened the door in 2004. The duo completed their walking path of 7,503 gates in the winter of 2005.

Watching 4 million take that journey through its two-week run revived the basic question that has surrounded Christo's work since his Berlin Wall oil-barrel blockade in 1961. …
