Communication Organizations Sponsor Social Media Seminar in OKC

Social media does not appear to be another fly-by-night frenzy.

"The conversation we are having about social media right now is where we were a few years ago when people talked about having their own Web site on the Internet," said Mike Koehler, social media director for Schnake Turnbo Frank. "Eventually, it's a no- brainier."

On Wednesday, members of the communication community are gathering for OkieSMart: The Art of Social Media.

OkieSMart is a seminar to discuss the evolving world of social media. This is the first year for the event to be held.

OkieSMart came together when several communication organizations sought to sponsor a social media seminar, said Andrea Meyers, Public Relations Society of America - Tulsa committee chair for the seminar.

The organizations were all looking to bring in Peter Shankman as a speaker.

Meyers said the organizations saw that it would be beneficial to combine their resources together to sponsor one big conference.

OkieSMart is sponsored by the Tulsa chapters of the International Association of Business Communicators, PRSA and Tulsa Press Club. It is presented by Cherokee Nation Entertainment.

"It's great to get all the communicators in town," she said. "We are a small-knit group, and we like these types of events."

PR Week Magazine stated that Shankman, the featured speaker, has "redefined the art of networking." His own Web service, "Help a Reporter Out," connects reporters from all over the country with possible story sources. In less than a year, it has become the largest free-source repository in the world. …
