Any time of the year, Santa Fe Market offers fabulous American Indian art in its many art galleries. But one weekend a year, the annual Indian Market offers an open-air market for major American Indian designers and crafts people to show their wares.
The official Indian Market dates are Aug. 22-23 but best of show and previews are on Aug. 21. Private galleries open their doors for special showings as early as Aug. 19. The Indian Market Gala on Aug. 22 will offer unique pieces donated by market artists, including one special collaborative piece, at a dinner in the La Fonda Hotel on the Plaza.
The evening opens at 5 p.m. and advance reservations are required for this dinner benefiting the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, which sponsors the Santa Fe Market. The price is $125 per person or $1,250 for a table of 10 guests. For reservations, call (505) 983-5220.
A multitude of art galleries are on Santa Fe's historic Canyon Road but many others are scattered throughout the city. This would be a good time to visit the awe-inspiring Allan Houser Sculpture Gardens just 30 minutes south of Santa Fe. On Aug. 22-23, the gardens will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests may tour the archives, the foundry and the sculpture gardens.
On Aug. 23 at 1:30 p.m., W. Jackson Rushing III, author of Allan Houser: An American Master (Chiricahua Apache 1914-1994), will speak and sign his books. For directions or maps, call (505) 471-1528. …
