HOUSTON (JR) -- The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in Oklahoma for the week ended Friday rose one to 104.

The statewide rig count for the week was down 33.7 percent from 157 a year earlier and down 35 percent from its 2001 peak of 160 for the week ended July 13, according to a weekly report from Houston- based Baker Hughes.

The average Oklahoma rig count in June was 105, the highest monthly average since October when the average weekly rig count was 115. The average for June was up from 98 in May but down from 157 for June 2001.

The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States last week rose two in 840, breaking a string of the fourth consecutive weekly decreases.

For the last week of June in 2001, the U.S. rig count was 1,275. The nationwide rig count was down from its 2001 peak of 1,293 for the second week of July. …
