State's Average Rig Count Less Than Previous Month, Year

HOUSTON (JR) -- Oklahoma's average weekly rig count in September was 96, down from 106 in August and the lowest monthly average since April.

The state average rig count for the month also was down from 131 for September 2001, according to a report from Houston-based Baker Hughes.

The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in Oklahoma for the week ended Friday was unchanged at 96.

The statewide rig count for the week was down 23.2 percent from 125 a year earlier and down 40 percent from its 2001 peak of 160 for the week ended July 13, according to Baker Hughes.

The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States last week rose 23 to 875, the highest weekly rig count since the first week of January.
