Tinker Air Force Base Opens New Job Information Center

Civilians applying for jobs at Tinker Air Force Base are finding that red tape hangs loosely around the process nowadays.

Not only have the strings been loosened, but now there's a more applicant-friendly attitude.

With the threat of losing nearly half its work force in the next five years, Tinker's Civilian Employment Office has expanded to accommodate the huge influx of new employees.

In the past month, that process has paid off, said Dana Dudick, chief of the employment office.

A new job information center opened on the east side of Tinker, just off Douglas Boulevard, at the Lancer Gate. Before June 1, the building was the place where visitors received temporary base passes.

This new center offers a second location for job applicants to pick up forms, obtaining information on job openings and qualifications. After the forms have been properly filled out, they can be returned to the same office, Dudick said.

"In just a little over a month, we've received 150 visitors and 200 calls at the center," Dudick said. "I think that all the people who arrived there received the information they needed to find a job. Everyone seems to like it."

Besides the need to rapidly rebuild its work force, the center was opened because of stricter security procedures laid down after the Sept. 11 terrorists' attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

"This location will make it easier for people to gain access to one of our employment offices," Dudick said.

This is part of the effort to streamline the entire process. Although many of the job openings are posted on the base's Web site, applicants still must file forms to start the employment process.

"While we've gotten this much computerized, applicants still need to fill out the forms and bring them to us," she said. "Now, at least, they can print out the forms at home, fill them out and be ahead of the process when they arrive. …
