OKC Area Auto Sales Decline in June

Sales for area new-car dealers were down in June, marking the third time this year that monthly sales lagged those of 2001, according to trade association figures released Thursday.

There were 8,659 new and used cars and trucks sold last month, down 6.8 percent from 9,292, and down 4.7 percent from the 9,086 units sold in May, the Metropolitan Auto Dealers Association reported.

Even though sales are lagging somewhat - even those months in which gains were recorded, the increases were almost negligible - "things are not going bad," said Peter Hodges, association executive director. "This is just a slow time," he said. "It's just that we're competing with the last two or three years and that makes it look bad."

After all, he said, more than 50,000 units have been sold through June. "The encouraging part is that half the year is gone and we are at the halfway point of selling 100,000 vehicles. Any time you have a 100,000-car year, it's a good year."

Most dealers still are doing good, but they are anxious "for things to get back into the black," Hodges said. …
