HOUSTON (JR) -- The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in Oklahoma for the week ended Friday was higher than the same week of the previous year for the first time in more than 13 months.

Oklahoma's rig count for the week was 92, up from 91 the previous week and 91 for the first week of November 2001, according to a weekly report from Houston-based Baker Hughes. The last time the state rig count was higher than the same week a year earlier was for the last week of September 2001 when there were 125 active rigs, compared with 122 a year earlier.

The state's rig count has been in a narrow range of 91-96 for the last nine weeks.

The 2001 peak for the state's rig count was 160 for the second week of July. The highest weekly rig count in 2002 was 111 for the first week of August. …
