Istook Reappointed to House Panel Chair

Article excerpt

U.S. Rep. Ernest Istook, R-Okla., on Wednesday was reappointed chairman of the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Treasury, Postal, and General Government.

As chairman of the subcommittee, Istook oversees almost $20 billion in annual spending, with jurisdiction over the White House, the Treasury Department (including the Internal Revenue Service), and many other government agencies. This will be Istook's third term as an appropriations subcommittee chairman, and his second term heading this subcommittee. His reappointment was confirmed Wednesday.

"Since we now have a smaller delegation, we need the extra influence of chairmanships more than ever," Istook said. "It gives me leverage to apply Oklahoma's common-sense approach to things."

A partial list of the agencies under his subcommittee's jurisdiction include Treasury Department, U.S. Postal Service, the Executive Office of the President, the Council of Economic Advisers, the executive residence at the White House, the Office of National Drug Control Policy, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Customs Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Office of Homeland Security, the National Security Council, the Office of Management and Budget, Federal Election Commission, General Services Administration, Office of Special Counsel, National Archives and Records Administration, Office of Government Ethics, and the Office of Personnel Management.

The same subcommittee was previously chaired by another Oklahoman, the late Oklahoma Congressman Tom Steed from 1957 to 1976.
