An international news service that provides weather information to the airline industry said Wednesday it will open an office in Norman this summer at the heart of a growing meteorological research campus.

Weathernews Americas, a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Weathernews International, said the new aviation center will provide weather forecasting and other services to corporate clients American Airlines and regional air carrier American Eagle. Eventually, the company said it plans to expand its customer base to include other major air carriers.

The Norman office will occupy leased space near the National Weather Center. About 20 people will initially work at the center, said Jeremy Usher, president of Weathernews Americas.

"We view Norman as the Mecca of meteorology, not only in the United States but arguably in the entire world," he said. "It's a great community for us to join to build our new services for American Airlines."

Weathernews provides weather forecasting and analysis for U.S., Japanese and other international commercial airlines and clients in the oilfield, agriculture, transportation, and utility industries. Formed in 1952 by a former United Airlines meteorologist, the firm provides tools for flight planning that allow passenger planes to avoid dangerous weather conditions.

Usher said Norman was selected for the company's new office to take advantage of other meteorological resources in the area.

Norman is host to the Federal Aviation Administration Monroney Center and the new National Weather Center, which will house the University of Oklahoma School of Meteorology, the OU Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms, the National Severe Storms Laboratory and the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center. …
