Western Oklahoma bankruptcy filings fall 4.2%

Filings at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Oklahoma were down in May after being up for six consecutive months compared with the same month of the previous year.

The court recorded 1,135 bankruptcy filings for the month, down 4.2 percent from 1,185 for May 2002. May was the first month that filings at the court were less than the same month a year earlier since October.

Filings for the first five months of 2003 totaled 5,926, up 9.3 percent from 5,420 for the first five months of 2002.

OBA awards

The Oklahoma Bar Association is accepting nominations for its Liberty Bell, Courageous Lawyer and Outstanding Service to the Public awards. Nominations must be received by Aug. 12.

The Liberty Bell Award honors nonlawyers or lay organizations for promoting or publicizing matters regarding the legal system. The Courageous Lawyer Award honors an attorney who has courageously performed in a manner befitting the highest ideals of the legal profession. The Outstanding Service to the Public Award honors a lawyer who has contributed significant community service.

"These nominations are especially meaningful when they come from the public, and the awards are among the highest honors the Oklahoma Bar Association can bestow," said OBA President Melissa DeLacerda of Stillwater.

Nominations can be made by individuals or organizations from outside the legal profession. The awards will be presented at the OBA annual meeting Nov. 12-14 in Oklahoma City."

Judy Hamilton Morse, of Crowe and Dunlevy in Oklahoma City, is chairperson of a statewide committee that will review the nominations and recommend award winners for approval.

To nominate an individual or organization, send a letter explaining why the candidate should receive the award. Please limit the letter to five pages. No form is necessary to submit an entry. Nominations must be received by the deadline. …
