U of OK Health Sciences Center's VP of Research Wins Award

For lifetime achievements in science, Michael S. Gilmore, vice president for research at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, has been selected to receive a prestigious Humboldt Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation in Bonn, Germany.

Gilmore - the George Lynn Cross Research Professor in the OU College of Medicine, MG McCool Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and the director of the Center for Infectious and Inflammatory Eye Disease Research at the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute - said he would immediately initiate studies on how antibiotic- resistant bacteria are able to cause infections.

The Humboldt Research Award has a monetary value of up to 75,000 euros (approximately $90,000) and includes other financial incentives that give Gilmore the opportunity to spend up to one year in Germany on research projects of his own choice while cooperating with specialist colleagues. Gilmore anticipates visiting Germany for at least two months in each of the next three years to compare results and work on new experiments at the University of Wuerzburg, one of the leading centers for similar research.

The overall goal of the research is to identify new approaches for treating antibiotic resistant infections and limiting their severity, Gilmore said, noting that antibiotic-resistant bacteria infect approximately 2 million patients and claim approximately 75,000 lives each year in the United States. …
