Tinker Air Force Base and the Eastern Oklahoma County Tourism Council will host the eighth annual Star Spangled Salute July 4 at the base. The event is open to the public and admission and parking will be free.

The gates to the base will open at 1 p.m. with activities beginning at 2 p.m. Entry will be through the Lancer and Liberator Gates off Douglas Boulevard and Hruskocy Gate off Interstate 40. Drivers' licenses will be checked upon entry to the base. No pets, coolers, backpacks or glass containers will be permitted. Diaper bags and purses will be allowed but subject to search. Lawn chairs and blankets also will be permitted.

Planned are patriotic activities for all ages, including one of the largest fireworks displays in central Oklahoma. The public will be able to join tours of military and warbird aircraft, numerous food vendors will be on hand and the Air Force's Tops in Blue will provide musical entertainment.

This year's Star Spangled salute will highlight aerobatic aerial demonstrations featuring the Air Combat Command's East Coast F-15 Eagle Demonstration Team from Langley Air Force Base, Va. Other flying acts will include the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, an MIG 17F Fresco fighter from the Korean War era, a World War II B-17G Flying Fortress bomber and other civilian and military aircraft.

The U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team will return this year and new to the Salute will be the Wings of blue parachute demonstration team from the U.S. Air Force Academy.

At the conclusion of the Salute fireworks display, the Lancer and Liberator gates will become one-way outbound traffic lanes. Lancer traffic will turn north and Liberator traffic will turn south. Don't plan to stay overnight.

Major donors to this patriotic Salute include KWTV-9, Midwest Regional Medical Center, Rose State College, Coca-Cola, Tinker Federal Credit Union, Boeing, First National Bank and Data Monitor Systems. …
