Some people call pictures snapshots. Some call them photographs. I call them valentines. That's because Stephen Schwartz's new musical is about snapshots that bring back memories and tell a love story.

The title of his show, playing this weekend at Lyric at the Plaza, 1725 NW 16th St. in Oklahoma City, is a perfect Valentine's Day story. The title, Snapshots, refers to pictures taken by and of the couple Dan and Sue, now in middle age. Making its Oklahoma premiere at Lyric, the musical has a six-person cast, three men and three women, who depict three stages of their lives: their childhood friendship, their life as newlyweds and their present life that is falling apart. Playing the couple in the three periods of their lives are Brian Crum and Sarah Shahinian as the teenagers, Michael Marcotte and Kristy Cates as the newlyweds and Jay Montgomery and Stefanie Morse as the middle-aged Dan and Sue. The setting is in the attic of the home of the elder Dan and Sue, where they find a box of snapshots depicting various periods of their life: meeting, falling in love and falling out of love. One of the elder Dan's lines is "Our whole lives are here." As they go through the snapshots, the three sets of Dan and Sue act out those events. The story is touching and has a happy ending, just as a valentine story should. And it points out some real emotions that can diminish a love or build it up.

The actors have impressive credentials from Broadway and national tours, as well as regional theaters, and some have performed Snapshots in other cities in this country. All are talented in both acting and singing, so they complement each other.

Schwartz, with a longtime theatrical background as composer and lyricist, has worked in a number of tunes from his earlier shows such as Pippin, Children of Eden, Godspell and Wicked. Each song was chosen to fit the mood of the play's authors, David Stern, book; Michael Scheman and Stern, conception. …
