The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in Oklahoma last week rose two to 153, its highest level in 10 weeks.

Oklahoma's rig count for the week was up from 147 from the same week in 2004, according to a report from Houston-based Baker Hughes. It was the highest rig count for Oklahoma since it was 156 for the week ended Nov. 19.

The state's average number of active rigs during January totaled 150, up from 144 in December and 147 in January 2004, according to Baker Hughes.

During 2004, Oklahoma's weekly rig count climbed as high as 175 for the week ended Aug. 6. The lowest weekly rig count in 2004 was 142 for the week ended Dec. 17.

The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States last week totaled 1,256, down seven from the previous week but up from 1,084 for the same week in 2004. …
