Power of the Written Word: Technology Boosts Self-Publishing Business

Nothing boosts a speaker's credibility faster than the book he wrote, Giant Partners co-founder Matthew Myers said.

And advances in publishing technology and market distribution systems have made authorship easier and helped companies such as Edmond-based business strategy consultant Giant promote their talent.

"The publishing house model is still changing, because authors in particular are asking, 'What do you traditional publishing houses bring to the market for us?'" Myers said. "They can work around that now. It's changing the power structure."

It's also opening the door to an excellent marketing tool, said Colleen J. Payne in Tulsa. Payne promotes herself as an award- winning entrepreneur, author and professional speaker. Her presentations focus on inspiration and empowerment. Payne's self- published book, I Did It My Way And It Worked, was released for sale last year.

"I am an entrepreneur by nature, and I wanted to let other entrepreneurs know that I started with a $40,000 salary and created a multimillion-dollar company," she said. "And some of the things I've gone through and what others are facing could be done in easier ways."

Payne's book was picked up for distribution through bookstore chains such as Borders as well as Sam's Wholesale Club and Amazon.com.

"When I go out around the country to speak, people like to pick up one of my books, so it's selling very well through a large number of outlets. I've been very pleased," she said.

Payne said her motivation has been to support other entrepreneurs. That incidentally turns a slight profit for her as an entrepreneur, but that wasn't her intent.

Myers said his company is planning to release three new books in the next few months. The currently untitled books are being written now by Giant team members about strategy, growth and building companies. Giant lists its books on Amazon. …
