I had a visit last week that impressed me and made me think. The visit was on behalf of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber and the visitor was Mike Chumo.

The purpose of the visit, Mike told me in advance, was to hear my views on what challenges I faced doing business in Oklahoma.

Yeah, right, I thought. He must have some ulterior motive or is just going through the motions as a way of thanking me for our Chamber membership. Partly true. But Mike, in my opinion from our one-hour visit, was the real deal.

He asked me questions about things that impede doing business in Oklahoma. We talked briefly about the usual suspects like workers' compensation, lawsuit reform and personal income taxes.

We also spent some time talking about the effect the rising cost of health care has on a firm's bottom line. Related to that was a discussion about the general bad health of Oklahoma's work force and the devastation that substance abuse has on companies.

We addressed the issue of work force development and the challenges of finding qualified workers. …
