Oklahoma Rig Count Rises Five to 188

Oklahoma's active drilling rig count for the week ended Friday up five to 188, the highest level in more than a decade.

The state's rig count for the week was up from 151 for the same week in 2005, according to a monthly report from Houston-based Baker Hughes.

The Oklahoma rig count has been climbing along with energy prices. The average number of active rigs in June totaled 182, up 19.7 percent from 152 for December.

Oklahoma's monthly rig count peaked at 873 in January 1982 before declining with energy prices, according to Baker Hughes.

The state's average monthly rig count fell to as low as 50 in July 1998. The average monthly rig count for Oklahoma in 1998 was 62.

Oklahoma accounted for 11.3 percent of the rigs active nationwide last week.

For the week ended Friday, 1,668 rigs were active nationwide, up from 1,659 the previous week and 1,404 for the same week in 2005. …
