Kevin Calvey, R-Del City Pushes for Immigration Reform

As part of his congressional campaign platform, state Rep. Kevin Calvey, R-Del City, is pushing to create penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants.

Calvey is one of six Republicans competing in the race to fill Oklahoma's 5th District seat in Congress. The seat is being vacated by U.S. Rep. Ernest Istook, who is running for governor of Oklahoma.

Obviously, an employer who's trying to do the right thing, that's not the kind of person that needs to be punished, Calvey said. But there clearly are some employers who certainly appear to be deliberately hiring illegals, and that's the issue that needs to be fixed. We also need to have a system in place whereby employers can easily check to see whether a job applicant is legal or not.

Calvey was joined by state Rep. Randy Terrill, R-Moore, at a press conference Monday. Terrill had introduced legislation during the 2006 session that would have required anyone applying for public benefits to provide proof of their citizenship or be reported to federal immigration authorities.

The first version of Terrill's bill also would have required employers who hire illegal immigrants to reimburse state and local governments for any public assistance the illegal resident and members of their household may have received, plus attorney fees, but that provision was removed from the bill within a few days of being introduced.

Terrill said Monday he had hoped the provision regarding employers would be reinserted in the bill when it reached the Senate or possibly in a conference committee. But when the measure was eventually killed in the Senate, it did not contain any employer penalties. …
