Oklahoma Leadership in Law Profile: D. Michael McBride III

Michael McBride III is chairman of Crowe & Dunlevy's Indian Law and Gaming Practice Group. McBride, a partner in the firm's Tulsa office, has dedicated his 17-year legal career to representing Native American citizens and governments. He has practiced primarily in the areas of federal Indian law and gaming, as well as complex federal, civil and criminal litigation. He also has experience in resolving business disputes.

McBride is a member of the Federal Bar Association's national board of directors, a lifetime fellow of the Federal Bar Foundation and a fellow of American Bar Foundation. He also is one of two Oklahoma general members of the International Masters of Gaming Law, a peer-reviewed organization of gaming lawyers, executives, regulators and educators. He is currently chair of Membership.

His work in the legal profession has earned McBride much recognition, including the John S. Athens Leadership & Ethics Award from the American Inns of Court, Distinguished Service Awards as chairman of the Oklahoma Bar Association and Federal Bar Association's Indian Law Sections. He also has been listed in Best Lawyers in America for Native American law and Super Lawyers for business law.

McBride served or currently serves 18 federally recognized Indian tribes or their entities with jurisdictional interests in Oklahoma, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, Arizona, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and California.

This includes serving as special counsel for the Osage Nation Congress, Cherokee Nation Tribal Council, Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma and Sac and Fox Nation as well as general counsel for the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma Gaming Commission, Thlopthlocco Tribal Town and Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma Gaming Commission. He also is a justice for the Supreme Court of the Pawnee Nation and serves on the board of directors of the Sovereignty Symposium Inc., an Indian legal education entity of the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

In addition, he has served as attorney general for the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and the Sac and Fox Nation. He also is a former Supreme Court justice and special district judge for the Kaw Nation.

McBride also is a frequent speaker and author on Indian law and gaming.
