A Venetian gondolier singing Italian songs; ribbon-garnished poles lining the walks; a setting inspired by an outdoor market, complete with pizza, fruits, prosciutto and gorgeous floral arrangements; guests in their most elegant attire.

That sums up the evening of La Serenissima, the 35th annual Renaissance Ball at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.

The Italian-themed gala was presented by and benefited the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and its new exhibition, "La Serenissima: Eighteenth-Century Venetian Art from North American Collections." Ball chairpersons were Karen and Peter Delaney and sponsorship co- chairpersons were Marianne and Pat Rooney and Heather and Bob Ross.

Honorary chairwoman was philanthropist Jeanne Hoffman Smith, who in 1993 established the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Film Endowment at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art in honor of her mother and father, Grace Thatcher and Roy Hoffman Jr., to provide long-term financial support for the emerging film program. Since that time, the program has grown from an annual summer fill series to more than 300 screenings each year.

In addition to her continued contributions to the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Film Endowment, Jeanne also has served as chairwoman of the public programs and film board committees.

After enjoying the antipasto presentation in the sunroom at the club, guests were seated and served an impressive Italian-inspired dinner that included a salad of buffalo mozzarella, Campari tomatoes, basil pesto and focaccia croutons served with minestrone soup with semolina dumplings.

The entree was, of course, filet of beef, but with white truffle risotto, parmesan-glazed asparagus and cipollini onions. The dessert - trio dulce - was, indeed, a trio, with gelato with fresh strawberries and chocolate straw, pistachio gelato in a sugar cone and amaretto-sweetened mascarpone cheeses with fresh raspberries and a cookie. …
