As if she didn't have anything better to do, civic leader Connie Fuller has not only taken on the duty of sponsoring a new Girl Scouts troop, but is also securing volunteers for other new troops. Cathy Stackpole, executive director of Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma, mentioned to Fuller that many girls in middle schools have become interested in Girl Scouts, but not enough leaders were available.

Fuller volunteered in early December to be troop leader at a brand-new Girl Scouts troop at Taft Middle School in Oklahoma City, with Ellen Wheeler as her co-leader. They meet each Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

"I was originally told that 12 girls had registered and then, two days before the first meeting, I received a list of 19 girls. At that first meeting, an additional 15 girls arrived," Fuller said. "At our second meeting there was a total of 40 girls," she said. If they all register and continue to participate, a second group will be formed.

Fuller describes Taft as a great middle school with polite, well- behaved and friendly students. One of the math teachers was the 2009 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, she said, adding, "I'm so happy to have such a good vibe about an Oklahoma City public school."

The Girl Scout program, with its emphasis on leadership skills, community service and developing confidence, fits in perfectly what the principal, teachers and staff are trying to establish at Taft, Fuller said.

Because her offer to lead a troop was met with such success, Fuller was encouraged to find sponsors for these girls. What does it take to sponsor a Girl Scout? Just $55. That amount provides a vest, a flag patch, troop numerals, a GSUSA (Girl Scout USA) ID set, insignia tab, interest project book (it outlines many of the projects for earning badges and awards) and a journey book (it provides the activities lessons and group projects for the entire troop). …
