Tulsa-Based OfficeTeam: How to Recover from Embarrassing Moments at Work

Article excerpt

Ask anyone, and they will tell you they've had "one of those days" in the office when nothing went right.

Laura McFarlin, the division director of OfficeTeam in Tulsa, said using humor can help people recover from uncomfortable situations.

"You can laugh it off in some instances," McFarlin said.

The placement company works with so many different companies that there are plenty of stories, McFarlin said.

"We've had temp employees make blunders that they are not aware of - some are simple, like sending a wrong e-mail or not using the correct chain of command," McFarlin said. "Others are bigger and odder - and I cannot discuss those. But we have to go to them and help them recover from it."

Nearly everyone has had an embarrassing situation at work, said Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam.

According to an OfficeTeam survey, executives interviewed were asked to recount their most embarrassing moments at work. Some of their responses include the following:

* "I screamed when I saw a lizard in my office."

* "While speaking at a business event, I fell off the stage."

* "I got locked in the office."

* "I fainted during a meeting with a client."

* "I went into the ladies' bathroom by mistake."

* "While interviewing a job candidate, I fell asleep."

* "I answered the phone using the wrong company name."

* "I sent an offer letter to the wrong candidate."

* "When I joined the organization, my colleagues told me to sing a song."

* "I laughed so hard at a joke the boss told that I started snorting."

* "A personal voice mail from my spouse went to my boss."

The survey was developed by OfficeTeam, a division of California- based Robert Half International Co. OfficeTeam focuses on temporary placement of administrative professionals. …
