Association to release Judge Thompson biography

The Oklahoma Heritage Association will release Gentleman Jurist: The Life of Ralph G. Thompson, at a reception on June 16.

The book by Bob Burke and Eric Dabney chronicles the life of Thompson, who served as a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma from 1975 to 2007. It is the newest publication in the association's Trackmaker Series, which is dedicated to telling the stories of notable Oklahomans.

Thompson was born in Oklahoma City and received his bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Oklahoma. He served as a U.S. Air Force lieutenant and U.S. Air Force Reserve colonel, during which time he was also in private practice in Oklahoma City. He was a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives and an assistant minority leader from 1966 to 1970.

Thompson was nominated as a federal judge by President Gerald Ford and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in October 1975. He served as chief judge from 1986 to 1993 and assumed senior status in December 1999, in which capacity he served until his resignation in 2007.

"All who know Judge Thompson regard him as intelligent, eminently reasonable, and principled," said U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R- Texas. "Public service has been the hallmark of his distinguished career."

Burke and Dabney, as well as Thompson, will be available at the June 16 reception to sign copies of Gentleman Jurist. The event is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Hosts for the reception will include David and Molly Boren, Robert and Jan Henry, Bill and Barbara Paul, Bill and Lil Ross, Jane Harlow and the Oklahoma Heritage Association.
