Okla. State Rep. Sally Kern Opposes Federal Common Core Academic Standards

Oklahoma lawmakers should oppose the adoption of federal common core academic standards, a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives said Tuesday.

State Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, said she's against the adoption of federal academic standards. She said she wants to prevent greater federal encroachment into state issues.

"The federal government has a horrible record of managing programs on the federal level, yet many conservatives, in their rush to reform education, now think that putting the federal government in charge of education will improve it," Kern, a former public schoolteacher, said. "Two key Republican principles are local control and limited government. Now we want to turn education over to the federal government to establish common core standards that will have to be followed 100 percent."

Other education officials said the new standards might be too costly for the state.

"The common core standards are actually better standards than what our state objectives are," said Jill Dudley, president of the Moore Association of Classroom Teachers. "The big problem is the costs."

Dudley said many school districts have up-to-date technology but lack resources to implement the new federal guidelines.

"It's more about the money required to do it," she said. "There is a whole huge technology component in the way they want to do assessments on common core. We don't have the resources to really do the types of assessments that are needed in the common core standards."

In a media release, Kern said that the standards were not rigorous, particularly in the area of mathematics. …
