Sometimes a company is pleasantly surprised to find that a market niche is even hungrier for its product than expected, and the business plan takes on a vitality of its own, Brad Rosenthal said.

"The timing has almost been thrust upon us," said Rosenthal, the president of Tulsa-based Failsafe Hazmat Consulting. "We've been coming through the bootstrapping and early rounds of financing, working to develop our software beyond the beta stage to a marketable product, and we already have a number of customers.

"The interest has driven us, not the other way around," he said. "It's time to blossom and really go out into the world with a big marketing campaign."

Failsafe Hazmat produces software that helps in the shipping of hazardous materials by organizing a vast amount of government and industry safety standards in a multimodal format for easy access. The firm's database system helps companies avoid millions of dollars of fines they might otherwise stumble across when shipping materials domestically and internationally, he said. And even before the specter of fines, Failsafe projects a 20- to 30-percent savings in hazmat-related labor costs for large companies.

"We have interviewed multiple companies, such as PPG, Huntsman, Pinnacle Airlines, FedEx, et cetera, all of whom have expressed interest in what Failsafe's software solution could do for their organizations," according to the company's executive summary to investors at the recent Bricktown Capital Conference. "Federal Express has approved Failsafe Breeze as a commercial software package for preparing compliant hazmat shipping papers for FedEx planes. …
