Oklahoma-Based Tinker Air Force Base Losing 269 Jobs

Two Air Force cost-cutting initiatives mean a restructuring at Tinker Air Force Base and a loss of 269 positions in the 26,000- person workforce.

The Air Force Materiel Command is reducing the number of its centers from 12 to five, which is expected to save the Air Force $109 million annually. Tinker will become the site for the Air Force Sustainment Center and will be commanded by a three-star general. The AFMC said it is moving away from its traditional, management- staff model, with a center and headquarters staff on each AFMC base. By creating a lead center for each of its five mission areas, it will streamline the way it accomplishes its work without harming its ability to perform its mission, according to a statement.

Another change affecting Tinker is the Air Force's Global Base Support Initiative, which Gillett said will standardize and consolidate base operating support activities across the Air Force. …
