Foundation Nurtures Nonprofits $177,650 to Be Awarded Thursday at Annual Breakfast of Champions

Grants totaling $177,650 will be given to Evansville-area charities Thursday at the Vanderburgh Community Foundation's annual Breakfast of Community Champions. The event is co-sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana. It will be held at the corporate headquarters of Old National Bank in Downtown Evansville.

The grants will come from various sources represented by the Vanderburgh Community Foundation, including the Women's Fund of Vanderburgh County, the Fund for the Arts for Vanderburgh County and the Friends of Vanderburgh County.

In the spring, the foundation will distribute $30,000 in scholarships to area students. Later this year, it will distribute nearly $100,000 more in funds to support area arts organizations.

Thursday's recipients and the amounts they will receive include

Albion Fellows Bacon Center, $9,000 from the Friends of Vanderburgh County for support of the Center-Safe Shelter program.

Ark Crisis Child Care Center, $8,000 from the Friends of Vanderburgh County to expand capacity of its crisis day care facility.

The Boom Squad, $1,300 from the Arts of Vanderburgh County to buy percussion instruments.

Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library Foundation, $8,700 from the Fund for Education of Vanderburgh County and Friends of Vanderburgh County to support a GED assistance program.

Holly's House, $5,000 from Friends of Vanderburgh County to support its Think First & Stay Safe child abuse prevention program.

House of Bread & Peace, $1,500 from Friends of Vanderburgh County to purchase computer equipment to help residents look for jobs and fill out applications for benefits.

The Lampion Center, $9,000 from Friends of Vanderburgh County to support its crisis intervention and counseling services for children and families.

The Ozanam Family Shelter, $6,945 from the Friends of Vanderburgh County and $1,555 from the Fund for Community Development of Vanderburgh County to help modernize its kitchen and dining facilities. …
