Quinn to Cut Years off Budget Will Trim Spending Plan to 2008 Level

MARKHAM, Ill. - Gov. Pat Quinn said Monday that he is prepared to slash parts of the state budget back to levels Illinois hasn't seen in more than four years. Just days before the Democrat is set to deliver his budget address in Springfield, Quinn previewed massive cuts, saying the upcoming operations budget will be lower than in fiscal year 2008.

"This is unheard of Illinois to have such great economy over the course of five or six fiscal years," he said. "We've made Herculean efforts."

Quinn did not give details or specific dollar figures Monday during an unrelated event in suburban Chicago, saying they would come Wednesday during the address.

Quinn has already asked all of the state's constitutional officers to cut their budgets by at least 9 percent. That includes Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, who said her office will cut 9.4 percent from its budget. Quinn has asked most state departments to also cut around 9 percent.

He said the cuts will allow for necessary revenue for schools, health care and public safety. …
