Merder Injury Catches Up to Jasper in Class 3A Finals

Jasper High School's girls' basketball team overcame the loss of 6-foot-3 junior Shelby Merder in the Class 3A Brownstown Central Regional semi-finals, defeating Scottsburg, 62-51, on Saturday afternoon. But the Wildcats simply didn't have much left in the tank in the championship game. Kelsey Block was 7-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range, in scoring 21 points to pace Madison to a 59-42 victory over Jasper on Saturday night.

Merder, considered a Division I prospect, tore her medial collateral ligament late in the first half of the semifinal as Jasper trailed 28-21 at intermission. But Megan Sternberg, who scored 21 points, sparked the Wildcats' second-half rally.

"It was just a gutsy performance on our kids' part," said Jasper coach Ryan Erny. "We just came back and trusted our offense."

He inserted freshman Maddison Ubelhor into the starting lineup, replacing Merder. Sternberg again led the way in the title game, scoring a game-high 22 points, but no other Jasper player reached double figures. …
