Gary Jackson Was Barnes & Noble Ambassador Good Morning

With the tornado sirens blasting and friends and relatives calling to make sure we were OK, Wednesday morning was hectic. Neither my husband nor I had to get up super early to go to work. I asked him to run out and get some good coffee, and I began looking at the paper. I do not usually look at obituaries. However, this morning I turned to that page and saw the name Gary Matthew Jackson. I thought that could not be the smiling guy we knew. As I read on, the tears began because, indeed, it was. This was the smiling guy we spoke to all the time at Barnes & Noble.

My husband had told me Gary used to work at Track's Records, one of those mom-and-pop record stores that now are virtually nonexistent. They could talk for hours about rock and roll, both popular and obsolete.

Whenever we were looking for books, Gary was there to help and talk. He loved sports and always had a nice word about our columns. A few times when a friend and I would have dinner at the Knob Hill Tavern in Newburgh, Gary would come over and always make us laugh. …
