Bosse Hopes to Achieve Long-Held Goal at 3A

Article excerpt

Most teams wait until sometime in the preseason to set out goals for the coming year. Not Bosse. The Bulldogs set the goal of getting back to and winning the Class 3A Washington Regional right after losing to the eventual state champion and host Hatchets 71- 49 in last season's regional semifinal.

"Last year we were on the wrong end," said Bosse coach Shane Burkhart. "But we got a lot of good experience and as soon as we lost that game the kids set the goal that they wanted to get back and win that thing. Now we have to take advantage of the opportunity.

"Everybody we have back this year got to get in that game. They all got to experience the excitement and aura of the lose-and-go- home scenario. They know what it's like to play a regional in that gym. Now it's up to them to make this year different."

Bosse's quest starts at 11 a.m. with unranked Vincennes Lincoln (15-7), a team the sixth-ranked Bulldogs (21-4) beat 67-57 back on Jan. 7. The other bracket goes at 9:30 a.m. and features No. 1 Greensburg (23-0) against No. 8 Brownstown Central (22-2).

"We can't worry about who else is playing up there," said Burkhart. "We've got to take care of business against a good team with a couple of guards who can shoot it, a couple of good big guys inside and a player who can slash to the basket in (Avory) Mickens.

"They're going to give us all we want, just like the first time." The Alices are led by senior guards Jantzen Goodwin and Nick Klumpp, with Jordan Shots and Tyler Stutzman inside.

Bosse counters with an athletic side led by 6-foot-2 senior swingman Jalen Pendleton, who averages 20.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists. Right behind him is 6-5 sophomore JaQuan Lyle, who is being courted by a host of the biggest names in college basketball including Indiana, Michigan State and Ohio State. …
