WAZE-TV Parent Firm Owes $3.58 Million, Maybe More

Article excerpt

A week after the deadline for creditors to file claims in Roberts Broadcasting's Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, the adding machines have tabulated a total of $3.58 million that the company owes its various creditors, according to a story in the St. Louis Business Journal last week. That amount could go up, according to an attorney for the creditors, if any government entities file claims for taxes due.

Last month, the company - which owns what remains of WAZE-TV (Evansville's CW affiliate) - announced it would seek to sell at least some of its stations to repay the creditors. It's still not known which stations are on the block, but in addition to WAZE, the company also owns stations in St. Louis, Columbia, S.C., and Jackson, Miss.

The company blamed the UPN network's 2006 downfall for its woes, although WAZE (along with its three low-power translators, which remain on the air) already had become a CW affiliate before the company announced it would purchase the station from Evansville- based South Central Communications Corp. late that year.

Roberts closed WAZE's Evansville offices in early 2009, putting a number of employees out of work. Since then, the station has been run from St. Louis. A proposed sale of the station (for $50,000, a fraction of what Roberts paid just three years earlier) to a Maryland Heights, Mo.-based company fell through in 2010. In other news this week
