Stillwater-Based SST Software: Farm Management in the High-Tech World

Article excerpt

Agriculture is big business these days. Managing income and expenditures, calculating seed and nutrient needs, and documenting soil and environmental conditions are no longer the realm of paper and pencil. Today's farming operations use desktop computers and servers, laptop computers, tablets and handheld devices to manage the data.

SST Software provides software solutions helping agricultural producers keep pace with the rapid growth and complexities of the business.

Headquartered in Stillwater, the 17-year-old privately held company designs and produces data management solutions for use by agricultural service providers - farm co-ops, input retailers, agronomists and the like - offering services to growers through products or consulting. Those customers span 42 states, eight Canadian provinces and 22 countries.

"Our customers work with growers to identify the precision agricultural practices that work best on their soil," said Jeremy Bale, SST Software's marketing and sales director. "They employ our products and services to help the farmers manage information upon which decisions are made, from determining activities for increasing crop yield to improved understanding of the environmental impact of crop production activities. Generally, our products help farmers get the most from each acre and help them be better stewards of the land."

With such technological farming advances as GPS-outfitted field equipment automatic steering, and variable-rate application mechanisms, the technology used to manage all aspects of farm operations is very complex. "Agriculture is much more high tech than many people realize," Bale said.

And it is getting more high tech every day.

SST Software is on the cutting edge of developing more technologies that will be adopted and integrated years from now. "Early adopters now understand just how much they can do with this managed data," Bale explained. "They recognize that it is becoming more and more vital to implement best practices and identify efficiencies to compete in modern agriculture."

To stay on that technological cutting-edge, SST Software has expanded its workforce. …
