HENDERSON, Ky. - Pride and pain took physical forms Saturday as area residents welcomed home a fallen soldier. A nation's pride and a nation's pain took the form of small children, young men and women and older adults, some veterans, standing along Center Street, awaiting the arrival of the body of a Dixon resident, Army Spc. David W. Taylor, 20, who died March 29 in Afghanistan.

They took the form of American flags blowing in the breeze, tears that fell freely and the silence that enveloped the area as the entourage of law enforcement, family members and Patriot Guard Riders turned onto the street leading to Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home where services for Taylor will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Taylor deployed on March 12 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

His body, which arrived at Evansville Regional Airport just before 9 a.m. Saturday, was escorted from the airport to Henderson by law enforcement officers from Indiana and Kentucky, family members, friends and more than 200 members of the Patriot Guard Riders. Among those waiting to honor Taylor was Sue Baker, a Henderson resident and longtime friend of Taylor's grandmother.

"I'm here to pay tribute to a young man who gave his life for us and to show him the honor he deserves," she said.

Watching as more and more people arrived, stationing themselves near the funeral home, Baker said, "It makes my heart ache, but it makes me proud that people show tribute to someone they might not even know."

That was true of one bystander who was overheard to say, "It sends cold chills down me, and I don't even know him. It's heartbreaking... he gave his life for us."

Henderson County residents Junnie and Jayne James have been friends of the Taylor family for many years. "Those boys (and girls) go over there and give their lives for us, and we take it for granted," Jayne James said. …
