Lowery, Weber Reunite at K-State Moves on after SIU Firing

It didn't take long for Chris Lowery to land on his feet and find a comfort zone at the same time. He has reunited with Bruce Weber on Kansas State University's men's basketball staff. Lowery has been named Weber's first assistant.

"Obviously I'm really excited to be back with coach at Kansas State and have a relationship with him again," said Lowery, a Harrison High School graduate. "It's something I'm comfortable with obviously."

Lowery served as Weber's assistant at Southern Illinois from 2001-03 and Illinois in 2004, including Sweet Sixteen berths in 2002 and'04. Matt Painter was promoted to SIU head coach when Weber left for the Illini, When Painter departed after one season for Purdue, his alma mater, Lowery was named SIU's head coach. He posted a 145-116 record in eight seasons, including three trips to the NCAA tournament and one NIT appearance, but was fired last month after an 8-23 campaign. Weber, likewise, was fired by Illinois after its 17-15 season.

Lowery, 39, said he and Weber don't necessarily have anything to prove.

"We worked extremely hard at our jobs and just didn't win," said Lowery, who was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2005 and'07. "It's more reinventing ourselves than trying to prove something. Our record speaks for itself. We are going to Kansas State, which has a rabid fan base. We're extremely excited about having the opportunity to be there."
