Adlard Making Long Haul for Hall Reitz Legend Headed for Indiana HOF

Even workers at a soccer office in Boise, Idaho, knew how prestigious it was to become a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. "They understand what it means," said Shelly (Brand) Adlard, who helped lead Reitz High School to the 1981 girls' state championship. She will be inducted into the Indiana Hall tonight at the Primo South Banquet and Conference Center in Indianapolis.

Co-workers at the soccer of-fice in Boise presented Adlard with a "sound" card, which applauds when you open it. "Now that I have arrived in Indianapolis and all the relatives have come to the hotel, it's definitely starting to sink in," Adlard said on Friday. Her husband, Steve Adlard, is the director of coaching for youth soccer in Idaho; she works for the Idaho Rush club team.

While Adlard will be inducted to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in Indy, Ed Gardner will be inducted into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame in Normal, Ill., tonight for his officiating prowess.

For the past 51/2years, he has worked at Schultheis Insurance in Evansville during the week, then returned home to Lawrenceville, Ill., on weekends. Gardner has worked a full football schedule with a crew from Evansville since 2006 and still works boys' prep basketball and junior college basketball in Indiana and Illinois. Next year will mark his 35th year of working basketball and 18th of working football. Gardner officiated strictly in Illinois until 2006.

He was Marty Simmons' basketball coach at Parkview Junior High in Lawrenceville in the late 1970s. Simmons, the University of Evansville men's basketball coach, sparked Lawrenceville High to back-to-back Illinois Class A state titles in 1982 and'83.

In addition to leading Reitz to a state championship and being named an Indiana All-Star, Adlard is still UE's career scoring leader with 1,713 points. …
