Mt. Vernon, Ind. Donald D. Gumbel, 75, a native of Mt. Vernon, Ind. and a resident of Elberta, Alabama died at Mobile Infirmary Hospital, Mobile, Alabama March 30, 2012, from complications after surgery for esophageal cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends.

He graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in Mt. Vernon, Indiana in 1955. After high school he worked in the oil fields in Indiana and Illinois area. He went to California and worked at Convair Airplane factory. While there he attended San Diego Jr. College. He returned to Mt. Vernon, Indiana working construction and at the Farm Bureau Co-op. He sold insurance for Prudential, becoming one of their top salesman. He took advantage of several difficult training courses to further his education. He was a certified metallurgist and a combination welder. He had Hazard, Inspector and OSHA training. He completed a workshop at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia for Leaking Underground Storage Tanks. He had training in Field Applications of Health and Safety in Little Rock, Arkansas.

In 1963 he took a job at Babcock and Wilcox in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. He was an apprentice Boilermaker to the shop foreman in Construction of Nuclear Reactors, Steam Generators and Boilers. In 1979 he went to Embalse, Argentina to be Shift Erector on a rebuild program of the Argentina Nuclear Steam Generator. At that time, he worked for B&W Canada Ltd. in Cambridge Ontario Canada. In 1982 he was a Field Engineer for the Gaylan Project in Saudi Arabia working for Dravo Utility Constructors Inc. out of New York, New York.

In 1983 he was QA-QC Rep. for Replacement of Internals on four moisture steam reheaters at Rancho Saco Nuclear Generating Station at Sacramento, California. At this time he worked for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. From 1983 to 1984 he was Quality Control Engineer for the construction of Midland Nuclear Power Plant in Midland, Michigan working for Bechtel Power Corporation in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In 1985 he was Mechanical Technician and Inspector for Combustion Engineering out of Windsor, CT working on Refueling Outage, Unit 2 and Jumping generators on Unit 3 at the San Onofre Nuclear Power Station in San Clemente, California. …
