2 Children Perish in House Fire Firefighters Find Victims Huddled by Front Door

When firefighters entered the burning home on Thrush Avenue late Saturday night, they found the bodies of two young children, huddled together against the front door.

"One child was overlapping the other," Capt. Ralph Break of the St. Louis Fire Department said Sunday.

Killed were Kenona Hardin, 3, and her 18-month-old brother, Kyron Hardin. They suffered severe burns. Authorities pronounced them dead at the home at 5426 Thrush.

Authorities were investigating reports that the children's mother, Karren Hardin, had lit a candle at the home after a thunderstorm knocked out electricity in the neighborhood about 7 p.m. Saturday.

Police got a report that the fire broke out while she was down the street, trying to call Union Electric.

Break, the fire captain, could not confirm that report. He said Sunday that authorities still were trying to determine how the blaze had started.

Break said the fire had begun in the front room where firefighters found the children. …
