Army Gen. COLIN POWELL will carry an honorary knighthood into retirement when he steps down as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, says a London paper, The Sunday Times. He's expected to retire next month.

By the way, an honorary knighthood does not entitle Powell to call himself "Sir Colin." But even out of uniform, he'll surely still be referred to "sir."

Good tidings for KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: a girl, Cassidy Erin Gifford, born Monday.

The child is the second for Gifford and her husband, sportscaster FRANK GIFFORD. He called his wife's television partner, REGIS PHILBIN, to make the announcement on the air.

A publicist for the TV show said viewers could watch for Kathie Gifford, 39, to return next month.

***** After singer CONWAY TWITTY died this summer, TAMMY WYNETTE promised to fill as many of his concert dates as she could.

But a stomach illness forced her to cancel out at the last minute Sunday at Warwick, R.I. Wynette had checked herself into a hospital on Cape Cod after a performance there Saturday.

Wynette has a history of coming down sick on the road. In May 1992, while touring Canada, she was stricken with a bile duct infection and underwent surgery here at Barnes Hospital.

***** Whatever it is must be going around. At Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., country singer TANYA TUCKER canceled two performances.

Her father, Beau Tucker, blamed exhaustion. He said, "Her only two days off from performing recently were spent flying to Los Angeles to film the video for her upcoming single."

***** Still going strong at age 73 is another queen of country music, KITTY WELLS.

"Fans say, `Don't ever retire,' " she said after a five-hour show in West Virginia this weekend, "so as long as they keep coming out to our tours and continue to support us, we'll continue to play. …
