Christopher Visits Lebanon, Meets with Its Leaders

Secretary of State Warren M. Christopher made an unscheduled trip to the Bekaa Valley on Wednesday for a g meeting with Lebanese government leaders in hopes of reinvigorating Middle East peace negotiations.

Christopher drove to Zahleh from Damascus, Syria, in a motorcade of 20 armored sedans, including two vans with machine guns mounted on makeshift roof turrets. The vehicles passed through towns and villages, sirens blaring and blue lights flashing, as people watched stoically.

Christopher said his trip to the region was "designed to reaffirm the fact the United States cares about Lebanon."

Thousands of Lebanese were driven from their homes during a week of fighting between the Israeli armed forces and Iranian-back guerrillas. The fighting ended four days ago.

Christopher said the United States would help Lebanese victims of the fighting with food, disaster relief funds and an $11 million military hospital.

"I want to express the hope, and I underscore the word hope, that the understandings reached in the south will endure," he said. …
