Dal Maxvill has received plenty of praise for offseason trades that netted Gregg Jefferies and Mark Whiten. What has gone unapplauded was his decision not to re-sign free agent pitcher TODD WORRELL.

Maxvill and Cardinals manager Joe Torre had suspicions about Worrell's ability to pitch as much as Worrell wanted. Worrell had an outstanding 1992 season as the set-up man for closer Lee Smith, but Worrell wanted to be a closer again.

Torre had babied Worrell. He feared that Worrell's surgically repaired pitching arm couldn't work in back-to-back games.

The Los Angeles Dodgers thought otherwise and signed Worrell, 33. Are they happy with their investment? Let's check out a game last week, when the Dodgers went into the ninth inning leading 5-0 against the Astros. Worrell came in and, five pitches later, left after yielding three consecutive hits. He had given up a run and left two runners on base.
